Why I made it

A blank page is a bad way to work out what motivates you

Most people know when work feels good or bad, but explaining why can be difficult. A survey turns it into a score, while an empty mind map expects you to come up with all the right words on the spot.

I made Motivation Map to give people somewhere easier to start. It suggests useful areas to think about, but the finished map still belongs to the person making it.

How it works

Start broad and follow what matters to you

The map starts with one question: what motivates me? You choose from areas like growth, balance, impact, pay and belonging, then follow those branches into more specific factors. You can skip anything that does not fit and add your own.

At the end you have a visual map you can save, share, embed or take into a one-to-one. You can change the colours and layout too, because it should not look like a form somebody else filled out for you.

  • Hundreds of guided motivation factors
  • Custom branches, colours, and interactive canvas controls
  • Saved maps with share and embed options
  • Team spaces for comparing needs without collapsing them into a score

What I built

The canvas is the tricky bit

The map supports zooming, panning, touch gestures and different screen sizes while keeping all the branches connected. It can also be exported without losing the layout.

Around that I built accounts, cloud saves, sharing, embeds, teams and multiple languages. The hard part has been keeping the canvas playful while making the saved version reliable on any device.
